Rolling Stones insider appearing in Great Neck

As a teenager, Bill German met and befriended the Rolling Stones and became their official historian for the next twenty years. His recent book, Under Their Thumb chronicles the ups and downs he experienced while working with the band – including experiences touring with the band, staying in members' homes and witnessing shows and recording sessions. The book includes humorous stories and never before seen photos of the band.

On Sunday, March 25 at 4 p.m., German will be appearing at the Great Neck Arts Center (113 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck) for a special meet and greet and presentation. At intermission, Long Island's own Rolling Stones cover band Streetfighter will perform. This event is being sponsored by Brandywine Senior Living at The Savoy.

Vincent Illuzzi at The Vibe Lounge

The following article on a budding musician's recent performance at The Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre is by Kevin J. Ryan.

As we enter the Vibe Lounge, near the LIRR station and a plethora of pubs and eateries, the small, blue awning above the entrance gives little indication of what’s inside. A long staircase goes down to the Vibe, which is surprisingly spacious. There’s a stage at one end, complete with lighting and musical gear, and a small bar at the other. We get the sense that this is a small but serious music venue, rather than a Long Island dance club. It’s a windy Saturday night, January 28^th. One of the up-and-coming musicians playing tonight for the first time at the Vibe is singer/songwriter Vincent Illuzzi.

Illuzzi takes the stage by himself, wearing a pair of sunglasses and carrying his acoustic guitar. He sings the first line of the Beatles’ Girl: “Is there anybody going to listen to my story, all about the girl who came to stay?” without playing a single note on his guitar. He’s silent for one second, as if to let his assertive-yet-smooth voice wash over the audience before he grabs his guitar and launches into his first song. In My Defense. It’s a catchy pop tune that Illuzzi performs energetically while interacting with the audience of about 200, crouching down with his guitar between vocals and asking the crowd to move closer to him. They do, as he removes his sunglasses to engage them with his dark brown eyes before his next song.

A couple of songs into his set, the audience is clapping along. If his song craft and solo performance recall the golden age of the singer-songwriter, his lively showmanship is much more kinetic, reminding us a little of the young Elvis Presley.

By the time Illuzzi starts rocking the pop hooks of his What Would You Do, the audience is won over completely. He closes with Defiance, a song that could well become an anthem for struggling artists everywhere. The determined lyrics and foot-stomping, mid-tempo rock beat get this crowd’s attention, as they clap and nod their heads to Illuzzi’s lyrics: “I don’t believe in you, you’ll never tell me what to do.”

In this age of Autotune and pre-packaged pop bands, Vincent Illuzzi is passionate about writing and performing his own songs. He says of Defiance, “It captures the struggle to become a successful recording artist when there have always been people telling me that I can’t do it. This song is for anyone, anywhere who will do whatever it takes to follow their passion…to stand up for what they believe. I hope it speaks to people. I want to write songs that people can relate to and they can feel.”

While Illuzzi credits the Beatles, John Mayer, 30 Seconds to Mars and Coldplay as some of his influences, the 21 year-old Glendale native also says, “part of being a success is getting beyond just emulating your influences. If my music makes a positive impact on people, no matter how small, that’s what success is to me.”

Sitting down with Mat Brandon

Merrick native Mat Brandon seems like your average suburban college student. He works locally and is studying literature at Hofstra University. Oh, and his recently released extended play recording, available on iTunes, is garnering tremendous notice from fans and media alike.

As a child, Mat took piano lessons at his parents’ urging. As he got older, he discovered rock music and began to develop his own musical sense. He says that songwriting came naturally to him – as a young teen, Mat wrote a song dedicated to longtime family friend Robbie Levine, for Merrick’s annual Robbie’s Run.

Now 19 years old, Mat has continued to write and is a budding singer/songwriter, talented piano player and guitarist. His recently released EP, “I Would Run,” was recorded last year in Los Angeles with Mitch Allan, frontman of band SR-71.

The five-song EP, co-produced by Mr. Allan and Mat himself, presents radio-friendly pop songs with the potential to become hits. With the exception of one song, Mat wrote the entire EP himself. “I Am” was an unrecorded song written by Mr. Allan and his then-songwriting partner, star writer Kara DioGuardi, a former “American Idol” judge.

Ms. DioGuardi has worked with pop artists, including Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears, as well as many more.

Describing how music serves as his creative outlet, Mat discusses sitting at the piano and feeling new material constantly processing through his head, waiting to be written. While music is undoubtedly Mat’s passion, he is willing to see where his musical journey takes him. He is interested in not only performing and writing, but producing as well.

Battle of the Bands at Mepham H.S.

Mepham High School will hosts its 15th annual Battle of the Bands, sponsored by Sam Ash, on Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m. Students and teachers from Mepham will have a chance to put on a show for their friends and family.

There will be five bands performing and each band gets 20 minutes to play. The bands are, Something with a Mustache, Sacred Impurity, Seven Devils, Rooftop Manor and, of course, the faculty band.

Cool prizes will be offered. A trophy will be awarded to the first-place band. Tickets for the event are $6 at the door, and all proceeds will go towards the Mepham band and choir trip to the Virginia Beach Festival. Good music, raffles and an evening of fun are promised.

A quick update on Face the King

Last Thursday evening, local band Face the King headlined a show at Wantagh's Mulcahy's. Back in October, I sat down with Face the King, and they were quoted as saying that the best way to get a feel for the band is to see them live – and I couldn't agree more. Their sound is difficult to describe...but enormous. Their multi-layered sound filled the space effortlessly. They have a tremendous stage presence with an overall personality and intensity that is hard to ignore.

The band is en route to California as I type this, to perform a private show at the 2012 NAMM Convention in Anaheim. From South Shore Sounds, we wish them the best of luck for a show that blows the audience away (said with utmost confidence that it will happen.)

Local showcases at The Paramount

On Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:30), The Paramount presents the Home Grown Long Island Band Showcase, featuring NTOR, Verse the Empire, Craving Strange and Oogee Wawa.

Saturday, January 14 is Locals Night Out, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Featuring Don't Run, Aurora, Floodwire, J.S.N., The B-List and Allies (formerly Along The Falls.)

Since the spring of 2010, South Shore Sounds and the associated community newspapers have been following a number of local musicians. As we prepare to celebrate the new year, we take a look back at what some of the talented locals we have followed this year have accomplished.

NGHBRS, hailing from Merrick and Bellmore, have had a busy year, including a large summer tour with Gabriel the Marine. The band is back on Long Island, and scheduled to perform at Ollie’s Point in Amityville on January 8.

Face The King, with members from Bellmore and Wantagh, played Six Flags Fright Fest and opened for Zach Meyers of Shinedown at Mulcahy’s of Wantagh. They are currently recording a new album (their last one dropped in May of 2011) and have been invited to play a private performance at the 2012 NAMM convention in California.

Merrick’s Robbie Rosen has become a bona fide hometown hero, making it to the top 24 on “American Idol,” and making a number of appearances at local events. Earlier this month he performed alongside Aaron Carter as part of a Club Loaded show at Ollie’s Point.

The Sliders played Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre this summer in support of The Goo Goo Dolls, Maroon 5, Train and Gavin DeGraw and participated in Perez Hilton’s “Can You Sing” cover contest.

Wantagh native Jeff Jacobs recently had two instrumental songs featured on MTV’s “Teen Mom 2.” He often performs in various venues in Manhattan.

Merrick’s own TOXIN has performed with Bret Michaels and Sebastian Bach and released their EP “Skindependence.” Earlier this month they hosted “Toxin’s Rockin’ Holiday Show” in Bellmore, which included a collection for Toys for Tots.

After Dark (formerly Boomer’s Brew), with roots in Wantagh, Bellmore and Merrick, have been regularly performing locally, keeping classic rock alive and well in the area.

Rooftop Manor, whose drummer hails from Bellmore, released their first EP, “New Kind of Silence” and played a number of venues, including Sullivan Hall in Manhattan.

Bellmore-based Sacred Impurity released its second EP, won its second consecutive Battle of the Bands at W.C. Mepham High School and played at Manhattan’s Webster Hall.

The Dirty Gems, which includes a Wantagh High School graduate, released their new EP with a show at Manhattan’s The Bitter End.

Also notable this year, Long Island’s Funk Filharmonik returned to Bellmore; Across the Universe, a vintage-style vinyl record store, opened in Bellmore Village; The Paramount opened in Huntington with a star-studded lineup; and we bid farewell to Farmingdale’s The Crazy Donkey.

Count to Ten honor memory of fallen friend, release original holiday song

The story of Count to Ten, a Wantagh based up and coming pop/punk/alternative group may strike a chord with other town residents. Close friends of Brittany Vega, the Wantagh High School freshman tragically killed crossing Sunrise Highway in September of 2010, members Jon Zaitz, Dan Wolf and Alex DeSalvo banded together shortly after Vega's death in an attempt to reconcile themselves to this tragic loss.

What began as informal sessions turned serious when DeSalvo's father, Russ, a record producer and songwriter heard the group playing and asked them to record a cover song. This sparked a number of connections which led to the band signing with New York-based independent record label Airgo Music.

Earlier this month, Count to Ten released their original holiday tune, "The Only Gift I Need Tonight." The single is available for purchase on iTunes, and the music video can be viewed at www.youtube.com/airgomusic. "Funksgiving" in Bellmore

Long Island's Funk Filharmonik will be playing two shows in Bellmore on Friday, November 25.

Face the King faces good realities

Growing up on Long Island, with an interest in the local music scene, I often heard the same names over and over again. For years, local bands such as Seer, The Mercurial, Further From Resolution and, more recently, Stereo Serenade, were some of the ones you heard and saw everywhere you looked.

From local bars and pool halls to more established venues, these were the bands in the public eye weekend after weekend and year after year.

With the unfortunate demise of their previous bands, four talented, well-spoken young men formed the alternative rock band now known as Face The King.

Eric Zirlinger of Jericho is the band’s self-taught frontman on vocals and guitar. Joey Dammacco and Anthony Soriano, both from Bellmore are, respectively, bass and drums, with newest member Dan DelVecchio, a graduate of Wantagh High School, on guitar.

Local roots run deep here – three quarters of the current band members recall lessons at North Bellmore’s Music Emporium.

Band evolves

Though Face The King has been in existence for about two years, the members consider “the DelVecchio era,” which began in June, a more accurate measure of the current band.

Winners of last year’s Unsigned Band Festival at the now-defunct Crazy Donkey, Face The King is sponsored by the likes of Spector Basses and Guitars, Vox Amplification, Korg USA and D’Addario strings, to name only a few.

Of the band’s songwriting, Dan says, “Out of all the bands I’ve been in, I’ve never seen songs come together so effortlessly.” The members agree that songwriting is still a group task. They are quick to point out that no one writes a song on his own, everyone contributes something to the process. A good idea, they say, sparks conversation. And they have a little help gauging value as well.

Eric, laughing, explains the “epic light,” a dysfunctional light in their practice space that only seems to go on when a great idea is born or a song is played just right. You can call it a fluke, but it has stayed constant through a full three weeks of writing new material. “The light has flickered,” he says, “so it shall be done.”

Epic light aside, what else makes Face The King stand out? Take your pick of inventive songwriting, tremendous stage presence, raw talent and enthusiasm, for starters. Each member has the kind of charisma that comes through in their music and, similarly, brings their own distinctive experiences to the table.

Restraint helps develop style

Hailing from different musical backgrounds, they have the ability to mesh different styles and ideas seamlessly. Joey explains that when writing, the idea isn’t to be flashy or set up what is best for them personally, but to choose what is best for the song. “A lot of it is about restraint,” Eric agrees.

Does that restraint hold them back creatively? The consensus was no, it actually does just the opposite. Joey says it makes them step out of their comfort zone, and Dan agrees – you’re forced to grow.

And they’re working hard at it.

Take a basic work week, add in your typical personal relationships, and then mix in rehearsal at least three times a week and all the other responsibilities that come with being an active band. Not to mention playing venues on Long Island and traveling to Connecticut and New Jersey for shows.

The members agree, you work full time for a band. But according to Joey, if you want the band bad enough, you’ll manage to balance it with the rest of your activities.

“This is the band you always want to be with,” Eric says. He is met with agreement, and the conversation turns to touring. While Joey acknowledges that you never really know a person until you’re living with them, he also says that no other band has made him as happy as this one, and he looks forward to hitting the road with them.

The best way to get a feel for the band, they say, is to see them live. The band works hard to get the audience involved in the show, and Eric’s goal, he says, is to go a show and stop singing...and have the audience do it for him. Joey describes the material for their upcoming EP as “so large-sounding...it’s getting crazy.”

Three bands perform

Sacred Impurity: Driven by a dream

Hot off a second consecutive win as the top band in Mepham’s spring Battle of the Bands, and off a second extended play CD recorded to help them demo their music to interested record labels, five Mepham graduates – and one senior Mepham student – are intent on showing the “adult” world that they are indeed in the “game” and not wasting their youth. They say they are working, in fact, toward the American dream of success their way.

Their band Sacred Impurity has come a long way since being showcased at the Jones Beach bandshell during the autism walk two years ago, when singer Derek Hofheimer, drummer Chris Carlson, and guitarists Anthony Muhlig and Evan Kuriga took the stage and played a set of metal and ‘90s grunge standards to curious onlookers. Bellmore Life highlighted the quartet on Page 4 that week.

But with Kelly O’Leary on vocals and guitar, and Nick DiPace – a Mepham High School senior – on guitar both having replaced Mr. Kuriga, the band has added depth and flexibility to the lineup. Ms. O’Leary, heading to Nassau Community College in the fall to study vocal performance – and an admirer of both Adele and the band Evanescence – helps mix the band’s presentations up. Having performed solo, she’s “happy to be in the band” that provides back up to her strong vocals.

Mr. Hofheimer says of the new vocal additions that “we can now experiment with our new range of vocals” and get broader sound with the additions. He also admits to being more comfortable on stage these days than when the band first started performing.

Mr. Hofheimer’s influences include Scott Weiland of STP and Sean Morgan of Seether. He will attend Nassau Community College in the fall, though he is undecided on what course of study he will pursue.

The band doesn’t shy away from its grunge leanings, saying it plays a mix of both ’90s metal and ’90s grunge, a la Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica and others. During a lighter moment bassist Joe Carucci, a junior at Five Towns College studying broadcasting, and original guitarist Anthony Muhlig, who will attend an electrical trade school, appear to show their differences as to who is the best band in the world. “Kiss!” blurts out Mr. Muhlig. “Pantera!” counters Mr. Carucci.

Any differences are nowhere to be seen when the band is in top form. Mr. Carlson, whose influences include Stu Copeland of The Police, says the band has played at such venues as Vibes in Rockville Centre, and Broadway Bar and Ollie’s Point, both in Amityville. The band has also opened for The Misfits at Crazy Donkey on Route 110 in Farmingdale, and has played that venue quite often.

As proof of the band’s growth, Mr. Carucci told this newspaper the band is looking to reach into other venues out of state, such as New Jersey and points south, as well as venues in Connecticut.

“We feel we have a good following here now, and we don’t want to oversaturate ourselves,” said Mr. Muhlig. The plan would be to travel out-of-state and play extensively, building anticipation for their followers on Long Island for their return.

Anywhere they play in the future will feature new music they are writing, such as the songs that can be heard on a five-song EP CD the band cut recently at the Music Palace in Franklin Square. This newspaper noted there are studios in Bellmore also up to the task of recording their songs.

“We’ve made some good contacts during our gigs,” said Mr. Muhlig, and are making good on their potential musical capital by recording there. There may be a record label in their future from the outcome of their recordings, Ms. O’Leary suggested.

The creativity of the band in writing songs appears to be not so much a magical, mystical element coming from on-high at all hours of the night or early morning, but a more collective approach from simply hearing a melody or grabbing a lyric and sharing it with the other band members to flush it out more comprehensively, until each of them is satisfied they have a new song.

“No one member makes one song themselves,” Mr. Muhlig revealed. “Everyone contributes to the process.” Fair enough.

Of their new extended play CD called “Wasted Youth,” this newspaper was struck by the irony of the title explained by Mr. Carucci. What youth is being wasted? this newspaper wanted to know. “It’s more about showing adults that we are into the dream of being successful, that we have the dream inside us, the dream they always tell us we can achieve once we get out into the real, working world, that we ‘get it,’ that we aren’t ‘wasting our youth’ on nonoriented goals.

“We want to get somewhere with this,” he said.

Sacred Impurity will play at Bellmore’s Friday Night Car Show east of the train station on October 7, and is working toward appearing at the Bellmore Family Street Festival in September.

"Across The Universe" opens in Bellmore

A new vinyl record store has opened in Bellmore Village, offering rock memorabilia, posters, t-shirts and other fashion apparel, and of course, records ranging from the 1950's through the '90s. The store seeks, among other things, to support local bands and hopes to be a venue for CD releases.

Introducing The Dirty Gems

The Dirty Gems is a Brooklyn-based sextet (with one member hailing from Wantagh) formed from the wreckage of Long Island's popular cover band Pump Yo Brakes. The Dirty Gems' original music takes its cues from the likes of Gnarls Barkley, The B52's, No Doubt and Dr. Dre. Since forming in March of 2011, they have played many of Long Island and NYC's best venues. In September, they will release their debut self-titled EP, currently in production at Body In Motion Music in Point Lookout.

Reaching ever higher: Rooftop Manor

Rooftop Manor has played multiple shows and charity events on Long Island, as well as New York City’s Webster Hall and The Bitter End. They competed in a nationwide battle of the bands in 2010 and made it to the semifinals.

That’s quite a musical resumé for a group of young men who have not yet graduated high school. So, who is this young power group?

Rooftop Manor consists of Bellmore native Philip Gibson, a senior at Mepham High School and drummer for the band; Callan Fish, a sophomore from Glen Head on bass; lead vocalist Marcus Tamkin, a senior from Locust Valley who also plays guitar and keyboard; and Caleb Jenkinson, a senior from Port Washington on guitar, keyboard and back up vocals.

Rooftop Manor formed in 2009 after Phil, Marcus and Cal met at the School of Rock in Port Washington. They recruited Caleb and began writing and playing original indie and alternative music.

With a combination of traditional training and self-taught knowledge, these multitalented teenagers have built themselves an extensive musical repertoire. When asked about what they do in their free time, each member’s response includes, what else? Music.

With college looming only a year away for three members of the band, they are faced with some difficult decisions. One thing is certain: They all want to pursue music in one form or another. Whether studying the music industry or just continuing to perform whenever possible, it’s clear that the members of Rooftop Manor take their craft seriously, and intend to continue honing their skills.

Outside of the band, drummer Phil interns at The Rock Underground in Bellmore, and is working on building his own start-up clothing company. Guitarist Caleb is similarly occupied, writing his own music, both teaching and taking music lessons, singing in his church choir and interning at a music production company.

Despite their busy schedules, the boys are still active as a band. In addition to regular shows and battles of the bands, they have participated in a number of charity events. They have participated in fundraisers for Doctors Without Borders, JMSA Japan Relief Fund, The Community Chest of Port Washington, and Midnight Run for the Homeless, where they raised $1,000.

Debbie Gibson at NYCB Westbury Theatre

Merrick native Debbie Gibson, singer-songwriter of hit songs “Only in My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” “Out of The Blue” and “Foolish Beat,” will be singing in concert on Friday, July 29, at 8 p.m. at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury.

Ms. Gibson has been joined by fellow late ‘80s singer Tiffany on this tour as they have made stops all across the country. Ms. Gibson is the youngest female to write, record and perform a number one song.

In 2008 she created the Gibson Girl Foundation. The Foundation gives out scholarships to underprivileged children who display talent and have a desire to participate in programs designed to nurture their skills in the performing arts. Lap-style guitarist Pat Wictor and friend Claude “Butch” Morgan from Texas, notable songwriter, will appear at the Songbox in Seaford on Saturday, June 26, beginning at 8 p.m.

Pat Wictor blends the influences of tradition-minded musicians of the present and the past to create a distinctive voice of his own. He sings in a pure voice and makes his instrument, the lap-style slide guitar, “sing” back to him.

He can bring a room to silence, weaving several parts on his guitar and reaching quietly into each listener’s heart. His songs, drawn from the deep wells of rural blues, gospel, and country music, linger in the mind long after he’s done.

In a remarkably short period of time, Pat Wictor has become the name that is being chatted about on the acoustic, blues, folk and Americana circuits. Steeped in American “roots” music, Mr. Wictor is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country, gospel and blues traditions of our nation.

Mr. Wictor will share the stage with one of his longtime friends from Texas, who happens to be performing in the area.

Able to hold any audience with his true-to-life songs, stories and his sense of humor, Claude “Butch” Morgan is a top-notch entertainer who gives his best at every show. He has had his songs covered by the such artists as The Georgia Satellites, the Dusters, the Flying A’s, Mitch Web & the Swindles and others.

He has won several notable songwriting awards, including The Wildflower Music Festival Song Writing Contest, was a finalist in the Mountain Stage Newsong Competition ’08, and was a finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival Newfolk Contest (’05 and ’08).

Mr. Morgan has been a regular on the San Antonio music scene since the ’70s, breaking ground by merging country, rock, folk and all the other influences in his life into original songs filled with insightful lyrics and catchy melodies. Crowds of loyal fans all over Texas sing along with his originals, and marvel at the energy and the innovative new twists he brings to the standards.

The Song Box house concert series is now in its 11th year. This month’s show will be held at a private residence in Seaford. Seating is limited to about 35. A pot-luck buffet is served during the break — bring something if you’re feeling creative.

International Music Nights at Eisenhower Park

The International Music Nights concert series will return to Eisenhower Park’s Lakeside Theatre this summer, but with a twist: The concerts, which have traditionally run throughout the summer, will be packed into one month of music in June.

The free concert series, this year renamed “International Music Nights Month,” is presented by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, with support from Lake Success-based Canon U.S.A. Inc. This year’s series will feature 21 concerts at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, with starting times of approximately 7 p.m.

Lakeside Theatre is near parking fields 6 and 6A in Eisenhower Park. Special accommodations are available for disabled patrons, including reserved parking, easily accessible restrooms and a convenient reserved location on the hill. Assistive hearing devices are also available for the hearing impaired. There is no formal seating at Lakeside Theatre, so concertgoers are urged to bring folding chairs. If weather conditions are doubtful, call 572-0355 for updated performance information.

‘Uncle Melvin’s Apartment’ gets LI debut at the Bellmore Movies

“Uncle Melvin’s Apartment,” a full-length award-winning comedy film, will get its Long Island premiere in a special “Night of Comedy” at the Bellmore Movies on Friday, June 3, beginning at 7:15 p.m.

The movie, starring an ensemble of stand-up comedians who have traveled the country the last three decades and honed their crafts on Long Island, is expected to receive the red carpet treatment with limousines drawing up to drop off its many stars.

Written by Mitchell Walters and Craig Weintraub – in his office in Lawrence – the movie features Jimmy Shubert, Sheila Kay, Jim Dailakis, Stephen Muzzonigro, Rick Voight, Jessica Tsunis, Dakota Lupo and Mr. Walters.

The movie centers on a young man, Danny, a germophobe from Chicago, who travels to New York to meet his publisher about his new novel, which is rejected. But Danny takes a nasty fall and fractures his leg while in New York, and looks up his Uncle Melvin to see if he can stay for awhile to recover.

Melvin, as we soon discover, is a scam artist and his apartment hasn’t been cleaned in 10 years.

“Uncle Melvin’s Apartment” has garnered two awards already, for Best New Comedy and Best First Time Director, at the Downtown Boca Festival in Boca Raton, Florida. It also opened the recent Tampa Comedy Festival at the 350-seat Beach Theatre in Tampa Bay.

In an interview with this newspaper, Mr. Weintraub said the idea for a short film came to him in early 2009 about a nephew who travels to New York and has a bad fall, and has to stay at his uncle’s house while he recovers.

But Mr.Weintraub also “had a wish to work at some point with Mitchell,” he said, and called him to set up a time when Mr. Walters could read the script. Mr. Walters credentials include staff writer for “Laverne and Shirley,” the 1980s resurrection of “Laugh-In” and several other Gary Marshall-produced Hollywood sitcoms of the 1980s.

Mr. Walters said he broke into comedy on the Chuckles stage on Long Island, and recently performed with Rich Minervini on the New York Community Bank stage at Westbury.

Mr. Walters had a couple of unfinished ideas floating around when Mr. Weintraub called, among them a character who is a scam artist always trying to pull off scams out of his apartment, while being seriously messy and unclean, to boot. After reading the script, he said to Mr. Weintraub, “Let’s do this.”

“This is an ‘Odd Couple’-type scenario,” Mr. Walters explained, where the nephew becomes completely “derailed” by his uncle’s lifestyle.

The script took roughly 10 weeks to complete while they both worked out of Mr. Weintraub’s office in Lawrence, off Central Avenue. Mr. Weintraub and Mr. Walters will take their film to the Hoboken Film Festival on June 6, and to the American Film Market in Santa Monica, California in summer, an eight-day convention, to get some distribution ideas.

Not likely to be seen at those events, however, is the treat the audience will receive after the screening in Bellmore. Stars of the show, including Mr. Walters, Mr. Shubert, Ms. Kay and Mr. Dailakis, will perform stand-up comedy to wrap up the evening.

First off, we have two local musicians playing in New York City in the coming week.

The Sliders will be playing with The Morning Of and Jonas Sees in Color at The Studio at Webster Hall (125 East 11th St., Manhattan) this Wednesday, May 25. The show starts at 6:30, with The Sliders hitting the stage at 7:45. Show is 16+. Check out The Sliders for more information.

Local Jeff Jacobs, with friend Nate Marshall will be playing The Waltz Astoria (23-14 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria) on Saturday, May 28. Jeff will play beginning at 9 p.m., Nate at 10 p.m. All ages.

And in other local news, rockers TOXIN have just confirmed, they will be opening for Sebastian Bach (formerly of Skid Row) at The Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie on August 25.
